Ōhope Beach
Coastal living at Ōhope Beach.
Just 6 km over the hill from Whakatāne lies Ōhope – a sun-soaked seaside village that perfectly blends lifestyle, nature and community. Voted New Zealand’s Most Loved Beach by AA Traveller more than once, Ōhope Beach is an iconic destination and a beloved home for many.
Stretching 11 km along the coast, the beach features soft white sand and safe, gentle surf – ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, or simply unwinding with a barefoot stroll. At the western end, surfers flock to “West End,” which also offers the main access point to the secluded and stunning Ōtarawairere Beach – a true local taonga (treasure).
According to Census 2023, Ōhope is home to around 3,033 residents and 1,362 private dwellings, with many homes enjoying spectacular views of both the sea and Ōhiwa Harbour. With a notably high median age, the community is especially appealing for retirees and downsizers seeking comfort, connection and coastal living.
The village centre is a relaxed hub with boutique shops, local toi Māori (art), cosy cafés and a family-friendly playground – all within walking distance of the beach.
Ōhiwa Harbour, just beyond Port Ōhope, offers a playground of its own for kayakers, sailors, fishers and birdwatchers alike. Its rich mudflats and sandbanks provide a habitat for migratory bird species, while its calm waters are perfect for boating and water sports.
With its unbeatable mix of natural beauty, recreational opportunities and a close-knit, welcoming community, Ōhope is more than just a beach – it’s a way of life.
