In 2009, Ngāti Awa launched the iwi vision for 2050, Ko Ngāti Awa te Toki te tangatanga i te ra, te ngohengohe i te wai meaning, Ngāti Awa is the adze whose bindings cannot be loosened by the sun nor softened by the rain. The vision recognises future ambitions and aspirations of the iwi, led by the iwi, for the whanau, marae, hapū and iwi. The aspirations of Ko Ngāti Awa te Toki are Tūrangawaewae, Tū Pakari, Toi Ora and Mauri Ora.

The opportunity was identified by our hapū and marae, who know first-hand, the demising capacity to fulfil the day to day tribal obligations. Ngāti Awa supports the event as it will provide a platform for each one of the hapū (sub tribes) shown in Appendix A, of Ngāti Awa to exercise their individual hapūtanga and Ngāti-Awatanga. Ngāti Awa Te Toki (“Te Toki”) contributes to the organisations strategic directions of Tūrangawaewae, Cultural Identity & Connectivity with the primary audience and direct benefit to ngā uri o ngā hapū o Ngāti Awa, a secondary audience will be other iwi and the wider community.

Parking is available at Apanui Primary School or Whakatāne High School.
