FAQ’s

What is Cyclocross? It’s bicycle racing on mixed terrain and surfaces, with obstacles, on a short circuit for many laps. Riders can dismount and push, lift or run with their bikes. It tests both bike handling and endurance. With spectators close to the action they can enjoy it too.

Do I need a special bike to take part? No, your bike just needs to be mechanically sound, and you need a NZ Safety Approved helmet.

How much does it cost? Thanks to the Whakatane Cycle Club, EBoP Tri- and Multisports Club and Whakatane Mountainbike Club, entry to the ride is free.

How long am I riding for? Under 5’s ride for 5 minutes, or longer (parents can walk/run alongside), juniors ride for 10-20 minutes and seniors for up to 40 minutes.

How does the start work? All riders in each category ride together. After a set time (the starter will tell you when), a bell will signal one lap to go. The winner is the first to complete a lap after the bell.

Will I get lost on the course? Most of the course is taped or painted, and marshals are there to keep you on track - or to help you off!

What happens if I get lapped? You keep riding! Just remember to keep left to allow faster riders to pass.
