Tiaki Promise
"In New Zealand we welcome manuhiri (guests) in the spirit of manaakitanga (respect, kindness and hospitality). Hear our call. Feel welcome.
We also present our visitors with a wero (challenge). This wero is a challenge and commitment to care for New Zealand. This wero is the Tiaki promise.
We encourage all visitors to pick up this wero. To follow the Tiaki Promise. To act as a guardian, protecting and preserving our home."
A Tourism New Zealand initiative for both domestic and international visitors/manuhiri - Tiaki means to care for people and place.
Sustainable Tourism
The New Zealand Tourism Sustainability Commitment aims to see every New Zealand tourism business committed to sustainability by 2025.
Our vision is Leading the World in Sustainable Tourism - Toitū te taiao, toitū te tāpoi. E kōkiri ana e Aotearoa. To deliver on this, we must grow an industry which delivers high quality experiences for both domestic and international visitors while having a positive impact on local communities, contributing to the restoration and protection of our natural environment, and rebuilding the economic sustainability of the sector.
Local Care Groups
We are lucky to have an assortment of hard working volunteers in our community. Throughout the Eastern Bay of Plenty these groups are doing their bit to not just sustain, but regenerate our wonderful rohe through their mahi.
These types of groups are always looking for support, and perhaps if one of their causes takes your fancy, you could become their tourism champion, and work with them for the betterment of our local environment.
Waste Minimisation - Events
Events can create a lot of waste. If you are organising an event, you need to ensure that all the waste is properly managed and disposed of appropriately. Council bins are designed for day-to-day use and aren’t sufficient to handle the extra waste from an event.
Under our Waste Minimisation and Management Bylaw, an Event Waste Management & Minimisation Plan must be submitted for any event where 1,000 people or more are expected to attend. However, it is a good idea to create a plan for an event of any size.
Sustainable Business Network
The Sustainable Business Network is New Zealand’s largest and longest-standing sustainable business organisation.
With a network of hundreds of progressive organisations and people, the Sustainable Business Network takes the best ideas on business sustainability and helps translate them into action in New Zealand businesses. They share and work with businesses to implement sustainable business practices that in-turn benefit the wider community.
