Heads2Harbour Waka Ama and Surf Ski Race

This event brings together athletic paddlers from all over New Zealand to compete in a challenging ocean race along the coast of Whakatāne and Ōhope. The race covers 21km, and depending which way the wind is blowing, starting will be at the iconic Heads of Whakatāne and finishing in the beautiful harbour of Ōhope or in the opposite direction. The race is open for both Waka Ama paddlers as well as Surf Ski paddlers and will race in their own age, from elite to senior master, groups for the honours. Where the start and finish lies will be decided by Bevan closer to the date and is dependant on the weather and tides.

For the residents of Whakatane and Ōhope this is an opportunity to observe Waka ama and Surf Ski racing from close by. All the competitors will prepare themselves for the race at the Mataatua Reserve. After that, the public can watch either the start or the finish at the Whakatāne Heads.
