'Shifting Perspective' Exhibition
Shifting Perspective - Birgit Moffatt
Most of us face challenging times during our lives - some more severe than others - and we somehow need to deal with them.
Inspired by the proverb,‘Life is Change, Growth is optional. Choose wisely’, Shifting Perspective explores how changing the mindset can help us to go through troublesome periods, and to subsequently heal and grow from those experiences.
Moffatt has developed her work around phrases she has often heard, whilst navigating her own processes in re-evaluating her whānau relationships. She uses harakeke as a vehicle to contextualise her ideas.
Harakeke represents whānau concepts. The triangular geometric forms that are predominant within her work represent change, balance and unity. Together the two components combine to present a narrative of healing and growth. Harakeke leaves are carefully hand cut and left to dry into cylindrical forms. Moffatt uses simple threading techniques to develop her work. The act of being in constant touch with her materials acts to calm and ground her.
Letting go of expectations and accepting what is can finally lead to restoring mental and spiritual health, as well as personal growth.
