Tell us a bit about yourself and your offering?
HALO Whakatāne is a community led conservation project in the Eastern Bay of Plenty aiming to create a sanctuary around Whakatāne. Our vision is to create a habitat where Tīeke (Saddleback) can live and thrive in the heart of Whakatāne.
What do you love most about the Whakatāne district?
We love the diversity of our natural environment, ranging from sun-kissed coastal beaches to ancient native forests. Yet, it is the people of Whakatāne who truly make this district special. Their passion, care, and deep connection to the land inspire us daily, fueling our efforts to protect and preserve Papatūānuku.

What's your top tip for visitors to our rohe?
If you’re looking for an unforgetable adventure, hop on a boat and journey out to Moutohorā island to experience an abundant and thriving sanctuary. Keep an eye out for the Tīeke, which we are working so hard to bring back to the mainland.
Those seeking a more grounding experience should venture out to the Ōhope Spit Reserve. Wander along the peninsula’s edge, soaking in the breathtaking views of Ōhope’s natural landscape.
