Things to do on the Rangitāiki Plains

Ready for whitewater fun? If you’ve got play boats, slalom kayaks, or maybe a couple of old car inner tubes, you’ll have a great time in Kawerau.

Travel along a piece of New Zealand's rich rail history and experience the natural beauty and adventure from the comfort of a self-driven rail-cart

Nestled in the heart of an enthralling kahikatea forest, the White Pine Bush Road loop is perfect for families.

Walk over rolling farmland which leads up to native bush and a trig station. There you can enjoy superb views over the Rangitāiki Plains.

Do something new, New Zealand! The kiwi invented riverbug is the most fun and unique way to explore our taonga wai (water treasures).

This picturesque, well-groomed 18-hole course is on flat, easy walking land and is adjacent to the Tarawera River with mountain views and bird life adding to the enjoyment for players. 

Filled with fresh water from deep underground, it’s the perfect spot for a family picnic and refreshing swim on a hot summer day.

The sparkling blue waters of Lake Matahina offers excellent family kayaking and is an ideal spot for training.

Not as well known as the other courses in our District, the Te Teko golf course provides a relaxing atmosphere ideal for the casual golfer and groups.

For fresh, succulent strawberries grown in our Whakatane orchard, picked daily for you or pick your own berries (when available) come and visit R n Bees Berry Orchard!
