Seasoned pros, passionate paddlers and keen beginners have a plethora of surf spots to choose from in the Whakatāne area.
The western end of Ōhope Beach - commonly just called West End - is the most popular part of the beach. West End is an awesome spot for safe surfing and ideal for learning to surf. The seafloor drops away gently, so the waves don’t break hard. It’s sheltered from the northwest wind, plus the water is often really warm.
This stretch of beach is also popular with experienced surfers, because there’s a reliable break almost every day. In certain conditions, experienced surfers have other options off Whakatāne, Ōhiwa Harbour mouth and Matatā.
Salt Spray Surf School at West End offers lessons for surfing and SUP, as well as hire of surfboards, SUP boards and gear. Lessons always have a great ratio of instructors to learners.
